Job Corps Student Leadership Summit

Last month, students from each of our Job Corp centers, along with students from all the nation’s 121 centers attended the Job Corps Student Leadership Summit at the Dept. of Labor in Washington, DC. This two-day event, hosted by Secretary Walsh, Deputy Secretary Julie Su and Acting Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Brent Parton, included training; conversations with department leaders; and a visit to Capitol Hill, where students had the opportunity to meet with 28 members of Congress.

Day one of the summit, students participated in an Interactive Q&A with Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and Deputy Secretary Julie Su, a networking lunch, and an educational tour of Capitol Hill. On day two, students attended an Employer Panel, discussing what employers are looking for; an alumni panel, discussing life after Job Corps; a panel discussion with Cabinet Secretaries, who discussed future career opportunities, and shared personal insights on their professional journeys; and a visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Center Directors also attended panels, covering challenges in achieving effective center operations; engaging Gen Z in life, learning and work; the Paradox of Change Leadership and the Power of Organizational Culture; and best practices and methods for positioning Job Corps as a first-stop destination for career-building opportunities, utilizing pre- and registered apprenticeships, and establishing and developing key partnerships.
